Questions to Andy at the 1997 OMD convention

Why wasn't Universal released in the US?

Basically it was Virgin's screw up. the released the album all accross Europe to use as a gauge to see how well it would sell and how well the singles would do before investing the money into a US release. According to Andy, there is still a chance that it might be released in the US, and not necessarily under the Vrigin label. Andy was very upset it was not released in the US and understandably so.

What is your favorite OMD song?

Romance of the Telescope

What is your least favorite OMD single?

Telegraph

What are the lyrics to the song VCLXI and why are they sung incoherently?

There are NO lyrics to that song. The track was laid, and the band liked it. Andy couldn't find the right lyrics to go with it, so he just mumbled through it in a way that he wanted it to sound even though there were no proper lyrics. It sounded OK, and the band decided to go with andy's mumbling!

Will you ever tour again?

If the next Best of sells well, and IF there seems to be an interest in OMD again, and IF he can get a band together, there is a chance of a small tour. Andy has asked Paul if he would be interested in joining him aif the above criteria are met, and he said he would. Andy mentioned several times that he wants to quit making music as OMD.

Does your new band have a name yet?

No, not yet.

Will there be a video release with the next Best Of?

"I should think so." Andy even mentioned going back and making a video for "Joan of Arc"

What will be the new single next year?

It will be a remix of one of the old songs, probably enola Gay. Reason being is to sort of "jog the memory" of the fans as to who OMD are and maybe spark some interest in the Best of album

Are you considering re-doing other old songs as well?

Yes. preferaably a few of them. It will be up to Vrigin to decide if this will happen as doing remixes and remakes of songs is an expensive process.

What are you currently working on?

New songs for the girl band. Andy descries the music as a tangent to pop music, with some reggae and soul influences. he says it should be very interesting!

What sort of OMD collection do you have?

"I don't have half as near the bootlegs as most of you do!" (laughs)

Have you considered releasing a live album?

Accroding to Andy, live shows that are released as ablums tend to lose thier feel and are not as special. He says that show is for that audience on that night, and it would take away from that to release a live album.

Have you spoken with Neil and Graham Weir lately?

No, not in a long time.
